In short

We went in search of winter, and we really found it.

Overview

In Search of Winter follows Lucy Shepherd and 66°North’s Siggi Bjarni Sveinsson into the Icelandic Highlands in the depth of winter. Base Camp proposed the expedition, then filmed, produced and edited the film, stills and reels for 66°North.

Outcome

Released on 66°North’s YouTube channel in March 2024. It led to a second film for the brand, True North.

Challenge

The proposal was simple: go looking for real winter in Iceland’s interior, with people who know it, and let the kit prove itself along the way.

Two people hauling sledges across the snow beneath a mountain peak.

Role

  • Concept and expedition proposal, 2022.
  • Logistics and production for a week in the Highlands around Landmannalaugar.
  • Filming, photography and edit.
  • A 21-minute film, with English and Icelandic subtitles.
  • More than 30 photographs and 10 reels.
  • Launch and press planning with Lucy.
The view along a loaded sledge towards the skier pulling it.
Pitching a tent on the snow, poles laid out.
Packing a yellow stuff sack at camp.

The road in

The film starts on the road and stays honest about it: a long drive in the dark, then snow, then a car that won’t go any further.

The road at night, seen from inside the car.
A passenger looking out of the car window at the snow.

‍

A four-by-four stuck in deep snow, a passenger standing beside it.
From the air, a four-by-four’s headlights on the snow plateau at dusk.

Pulled, not driven

Past the car, everything went on sledges. In flat light the horizon disappears, and two people are the only thing in the frame.

Two people and their sledges in a white-out, the horizon gone.

‍

Three people hauling sledges across the plateau.
A loaded sledge on its trace, the person pulling it small in the distance.

Base camp

Camp was pitched in the snow and became the film’s still point: the place the light changed around, from blue hour to the aurora.

Base camp in the snow, the aurora over the ridge behind.

‍

A red tent pitched in the snow under heavy cloud.
Two tents lit from inside at night, a head torch between them.

Under the ice

Inside the ice cave everything turns blue, except the head torches and the orange.

A head torch lighting a face inside a blue ice cave, a second figure further in.

‍

Inside the ice cave, a head torch against blue ice.
An orange shell and a head torch in the dark of the ice cave.
Looking down into the mouth of the ice cave.

Steep ground

Axes, crampons and a slope that doesn’t flatten out. The kit is shown working, not posed.

Climbing a snow slope with an ice axe.
Kicking steps up a steep snow slope, axe in hand.

‍

A narrow ice corridor with one small figure walking through it.

After dark

Winter days in the Highlands are short. The shooting carried on after dark, by head torch.

Pulling up a hood by head torch at night, a second figure behind.

In their own words

The film closes on Lucy and Siggi in their own words. An ode to Icelandic winter.

A portrait in a red parka, snow behind.

Two people together on the plateau, both in orange.
